Other than opening windows, are there any clever tips for keeping a kitchen cool while cooking in the summer?
Sometimes running the a/c just isn't enough. If one HAS to do a lot of cooking is there any secret to keeping the kitchen cooler? Anyone got any secret tips on this?
Heat rises, open the tops of the windows and if you have an upstairs, open the windows at the top of the stairs.

lots of fans and cross breezes. also it help to grill outside as much as possible and use crockpots. if you want to make cold stuff like pasta salads, etc., cook the ingredients late at night or early in the morning, when it's not as hot outside. tie a cold towel aroung the back of your neck. that's what they do in restaurant kitchens.

Do you have an exhaust fan in your range hood? If not, I would suggest getting one and putting it in a nearby window. Or, just a regular reciprocating fan would work.

Keep the humidity low.
Limit using boiling water to cook with. If you need noodles or macaroni, prepare them ahead of time in the early morning or the night before when it is usually cooler.
Limit using the oven during the hot parts of the day. If you must bake something stick to morning or evening, same reasons as above. Otherwise, try a crockpot, good results, less energy and heat.
Pan fry, stir fry, grilling and broiling are quick cooking options. Remember, the microwave is your friend! Make good use of the fresh fruit and veggies available. Cold salads and fresh fruit trays are good options. Gelatin is also good choice.
With a little planning ahead you can keep your cool all summer long.
Of course… there's always take out!
Also,
In the summer, avoid large amounts of protien in your diet in general. Digesting protien causes your body to produce extra heat and you will feel hotter. Limiting the amout of meat you eat can help you keep your cool. Of course, it will help keep you warmer in cool weather…

I keep my ceiling fan off. One to keep the dust from moving around, and two, to prevent the heat from rotating around. We do a lot of grilling in the summer so we don't have to use the stove or oven. If your kitchen is facing west, then make sure you close the curtains or blinds to prevent the sun from coming through. It's too hot where I live to open the windows, so we have to have the air on at all times in the summer.

The best thing for keeping my kitchen cool is my range hood. The exhaust fan helps draw the heat away from the stove.

Make sure you cover all cooking vessels when they are on the flame. This way, water vapour from cooking dishes won't add to the heat in the kitchen.
